My friend, into whose hands I hope that all these manuscripts of mine will pass one day, of this one I have something to say to you. A long while ago I jotted down in it the history of the events that it details with more or less completeness. This I did for my own satisfaction. You will have noted how memory fails us as we advance in years; we recollect, with an almost painful exactitude, what we experienced and saw in our youth, but the happenings of our middle life slip away from us or become blurred, like a stretch of low-lying landscape overflowed by grey and nebulous mist.

She and Allan H Rider Haggard 9781514192429 Books

Published in 1921, She and Allan brings together Haggard's two most popular characters: Allan Quatermain and Ayesha. Allan seeks out Ayesha, through the encouragement of the witch doctor Zikali, in hopes of finding answers about dead loved ones. He becomes involved in the rescue attempt of a young Portuguese-Scotch woman, as well as a battle between Ayesha's followers and her enemies.

I thoroughly enjoyed She, which introduces Ayesha, and am a long-standing fan of the Quatermain books. I found this one to be sub-par for Haggard, as there is frequent pseudo-philosophical screed that was often mind-numbingly dull for me. I did like, though, how different Ayesha's relationship was with Allan as compared to that with Leo and Holly. I also liked that she told Allan a just-sightly different version of her history that than which was told in both She and Ayesha.

Allan's skepticism, though, kept the preternatural abilities of Ayesha from being fully enjoyed, leaving the reader to figure out the truth in between her speeches and his thoughts.

The action was, as is usual with Haggard, excellent and exciting. Allan Quartermain is a hero I particularly enjoy reading about, and I think Haggard has done a wonderful job of developing his character. I also liked getting to know Umslopogaas and wish that I had read his story in Nada the Lilly prior to this, and look forward to reading it later.

Sadly, I can't rate She and Allan any higher than 3 stars, due to the long, dull speeches and explanations of Ayesha. If one is willing to skim over those bits, though, and focus on the rest of the plot, this is a good yarn.

She and Allan H Rider Haggard 9781514192429 Books Reviews

She and Allan was an almost obligatory novel for Haggard. Since Allan Quatermain and Ayesha are his absolute best characters it stood to reason that he would combine them for a single adventure. Unfortunately, it reads as if written from an outline for a "typical Haggard novel". There is the feel that Haggard himself just couldn't get excited about the book. Still, it IS Haggard, and worth a read. It only fails in comparison to works like King Solomon's Mines or She. In fact, if you are looking for another rousing Haggard novel, try Nada the Lily or The People of the Mist. They are both superior to this book. If you can't get enough of Haggard (like me) then She and Allan is worth a read.
Interesting cross over prequel of She. Curious why some of the standards like She who Must be Obeyed was changed... and why Allan Q. is in such denial about things... and She can play on that too.. Withstands the test of time and excellent read
Allan quatermain is the iconic white hunter. He can and has tracked his way across Africa into lands unknown to most white men.
She (also known as "She Who Must be Obeyed) is the eternal seductress, the half goddess/half woman who cannot die. SHE is the ultimate in the spirit world.
Allan, perhaps, can be seen as the ultimate in the world we call reality.
She and Allan plays out this conflict between the material and spirit against the backdrop of the adventure of pushing into unknown darkest Africa.
Not as well known, or as well done as "King Solomon's Mines" or "She" -
then of course few books are-this is a worthwhile sequel to both.
Allan Quatermain should have a bigger place in the records of literary history. H. Rider Haggard created a fantastic character whose adventures should be known by more.
Another of the original tales of "The Great White Hunter" whos not a bad guy. Stories are set in late 19th century Africa. Truthfully written with no PC, in a better time.
She and Allan is a very interesting crossover of sorts. H. Rider Haggard brings two of his most famous characters together in a story where a lot happens but nothing really happens to his principle characters Allen Quartermain and Ayesha. The story takes place before the Novel "She" and "King Solomon's Mines" Allan is sent on a mission by Zikali, a native witchdoctor so Quartermain can speak to the dead. He wants to know if the loved ones he lost still think of him. Along the way we meet several other characters from the life of Allan Quartermain, Umslopogaas, the illegitimate son of Shaka Zulu, and Hans, his Hottentot helper. There is a great hunt, a great attack and a great battle.
If you like adventure stories written by the man who created the stories so many authors copied in later years you will enjoy She and Allan.
Outstanding book! She is also known as Ayesha and Allan'is last name is Quartermain. You should read this terrific book first,
followed by the books She (who must be obeyed) and then Ayesha - The Return of She (who commands. Quartermain and some
Zulu warriors made a terrific journey to retrieve a stolen wife. They meet Ayesha who is so beautiful that she must wear a veil
over her face. She's an immortal who has the power of the earth and sky. Just remember whatever Ayesha says often has
another meaning than the obvious one.
